Extension of Grain Deal Favorable for Lebanon, Says Minister of Agriculture

Acting Minister of Agriculture of Lebanon Abbas al-Haj Hassan said that the extension of the agreement on the export of grain from the Black Sea ports is in the interests of the republic.

“The agreements reached are of concern to us, since we are buying such a strategic product as wheat from abroad, including in Russia,” Mr. al-Haj Hassan told the TASS news agency.

He noted that Lebanon prefers the situation in Ukraine to return “to its usual course.” “Of course, grain and fertilizers can be purchased in the United States or, for example, in India, but the question is where it is more profitable to do this,” the official said.

The grain deal was agreed in Istanbul by Russia and Ukraine on July 22, 2022. Turkey and the UN also became parties to the agreement. The agreements expired on November 18, 2022, but were automatically extended for another 120 days, until March 18, 2023.
