The extended social rate was introduced in 2021. A social rate for electricity and gas is cheaper than the normal rates and is intended for families in a difficult or vulnerable situation, for example people on a living wage or who receive an allowance for a disability. The extension applied to those who receive an increased allowance. Specifically, it concerns people with a low income.
From 1 July, the extended social rate will disappear. Those customers return to the normal commercial market for gas and electricity. This concerns more than 300,000 gas customers and 500,000 electricity customers, or more than half a million households in all.
The CREG calculated the total cost of extending the social tariff for 2021, 2022 and the first two quarters of 2023 at almost 1.7 billion euros, of which 609 million euros for electricity and more than one billion euros for natural gas.
