Expulsion of Indian Diplomats in Canada over Sikh Leader Murder Case

Ottawa

India and Canada expelled each other’s diplomats from each other’s countries. This step heated up relations between India and Canada.

Reported AFP and Reuters, Tuesday (19/9/2023), the Canadian government expelled an Indian diplomat who was strongly suspected of being involved in the murder of a Sikh leader in the Vancouver area last June. The expulsions were announced as Ottawa is investigating alleged involvement by government agents India in the murder.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly, announced the expulsion of the Indian diplomat in a statement delivered on Monday (18/9) local time.

“Allegations that representatives of foreign governments may have been involved in the murder of Canadian citizens in Canada, on Canadian soil, are completely unacceptable,” Joly said in a statement.

“Therefore, today we have expelled a senior Indian diplomat from Canada,” he said.

He did not mention further who the Indian diplomats who were expelled from Canada were. However, he mentioned the diplomat’s position as Head of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), which is India’s foreign intelligence agency in Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau in an emergency statement released to the Lower House of the Canadian Parliament said Canadian authorities were ‘actively investigating credible allegations’ linking Indian government agents to the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia last June. Trudeau said the involvement of foreign governments in the killing of Canadian citizens was an ‘unacceptable violation of sovereignty’.

The slain Sikh separatist leader was named Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He was shot dead outside a Sikh temple on June 18, in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey, where the majority of Canadian Sikhs live.

Nijjar supports the Sikh Homeland in the form of an independent Khalistani state. India has designated Nijjar as a ‘terrorist’ since July 2020.

“Over recent weeks, Canadian security agencies have been actively investigating credible allegations of possible links between Indian government agents and the murder of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar,” Trudeau said in a statement.
