After information was made public about the theft of more than $19,000 from the office of the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Cuba, in Havana, he has been expelled by the Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree for the Republic of Cuba.
According to the independent media CubaNetthe expulsion of Mario Alberto Urquía Carreño was reported in Decree 009/2024, signed by the Sovereign Grand Commander, José Ramón Viñas Alonso.
The media points out that the decision to expel him for “treason” was unanimous among all the members of the Upper Chamber, due to the serious conduct that Urquía Carreño showed in the case.
It is important to remember that the 19,000 dollars were part of the treasury fund of the Grand Lodge of Cuba, and generated controversy due to the actions taken by the Grand Master after realizing the crime.
And he tried to keep what happened a secret, alerting the authorities only after he was pressured by the Board of Trustees of the Llansó National Masonic Asylum.
“There have been many attacks that from his position as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Cuba he began to carry out against the Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree for the Republic of Cuba, maliciously and repeatedly distorting not only the attention of the main issue, but also the narrative of the events publicly,” the document indicated.
The council also considers that Grand Master Urquía lied badly on more than one occasion “regarding the form and manner in which the events occurred, the subsequent discovery, and his real intentions.”
According to an official statement shared by the Grand Lodge of Cuba shortly after the theft, the now former Grand Master avoided alerting the rest of the council about the theft because such a large figure “should not be outside the bank.” Likewise, he said that he did not want to make the theft public because disclosing it would create “discredit for the institution.”
