Expulsion of Father Rupnik from the Jesuit Society and the Future of Centro Aletti

The representative of the International Society of Jesuits in Rome, Fr. Fischlenn, recently published an open letter announcing that the expulsion of Fr. Rupnik as a Jesuit has come into effect. The expulsion order was handed to Father Rupnik on June 14, and now that the 30-day appeal period has passed and no appeal has been seen, the expulsion order is now in effect.

(Vatican News Network) Father Johan Verschueren, the representative of the Jesuits in Rome for its international synagogues and institutions, recently declared in an open letter that Rupnik “is no longer a Jesuit”. “The expulsion order signed by the Jesuit General was delivered to Father Rupnik on June 14,” Fr. Fischlen announced. The latter had 30 days to appeal the expulsion order, which has now expired.

“Father Rupnik had requested to leave the congregation as early as January 2023,” said Fr. Fischlen’s open letter. But Father Fisheren explained that since the vows proclaimed in the Society of Jesus “bound him to obey for life”, the “request” to leave the Society was by no means his ‘right’.

In his letter, the Jesuit representative pointed out that the “religion’s reluctance to accept his request” was due to “the fact that, in the face of so many accusations, it is hoped that he will take up his responsibilities and invite him to embark on a path of truth, to Facing the accusations of evil by those who have suffered many injuries”. Because of Father Rupnik’s “reluctance to accept” the invitation, the Jesuits decided to expel him.

Furthermore, Fr Fischren announced that “the Jesuits are determined to legally distance themselves from the Centro Aletti and try to end their partnership with the Center in the best possible way”. The Alletti Research Center combines research, sacred arts, and dialogue between Eastern and Western Christian traditions. It was originally an international community of the Society of Jesus.

The representative of the Jesuits pointed out that the Aleti Research Center no longer has a Jesuit community and that its status as a “public society of Christians” is being revoked. As the center is currently under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Rome, the Society of Jesus is working with the Diocese of Rome.
