Exports of K-Pop Albums Reach All-Time High in First Half of 2021

It was found that exports of K-pop albums in the first half of this year reached an all-time high.

According to the Korea Customs Service’s export and import trade statistics, from January to June of this year, album exports amounted to 132.934 million dollars, or about 168.5 billion won in Korean money, a 17.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

As for export destinations, Japan ranked first with 61.5 billion won, followed by the United States with 32.3 billion won and China with 28.7 billion won.

In particular, in the first half of this year, K-pop artists such as Jimin BTS, Stray Kids, and Fifty Fifty performed well on overseas music charts, and the United States, which was ranked third in album exports until last year, surpassed China and rose to second place.

Luminate, an American music market analyst, also announced in its mid-year report that Korean music was the third most played language in the United States after English and Spanish.
