Exporting cattle on the hoof “has given a very important boost to breeding”

Alejandro Dutra said that this tool has had a “very positive” impact on the country’s productive system.

Jump | The whole field | Almost ten years ago, the importance of exporting cattle on the hoof and its impact on beef production was hotly debated in the livestock sector, with conflicting views between the industry and the productive sector. Over the years, both systems coexist in the country, with their ups and downs, but with positive points for breeding, such as the low value for calves and an increase in production, which is estimated to exceed three million calves this year.

Alejandro Dutra, member of the Dutra desk and former president of the union of exporters on foot, said that this tool has impacted “in a very positive way” on the country’s productive system“I think it has marked the lowest value of calves this year. In addition, it has given a very important boost to breeding. Today we see that, far from having a negative impact, we are in a situation where more than 3 million calves are expected to be born,” he said.

Regarding the possibility of opening the Israeli market for exporting live cattle, he said that “it could be something very interesting,” but stressed that “with Turkey at the forefront, we have a very dynamic export that, without a doubt, is boosting the breeding sector” and stressed that “what we were discussing ten or twelve years ago, when exports began, has changed.”

Dutra indicated that currently “We have a very strong pull towards Türkiye, and this is expected to continue. Türkiye is special, as it operates on an annual calendar.but there is already talk of importing cattle next year in similar quantities. So far there are no problems.

Regarding exports of other categories, such as bellies, the consignee said that “there has been some export to China and Turkey. However, these businesses are very sporadic, with ships of 7,000 or 6,000 heads that do not move the needle in the total market. But it always adds up” (Cambio de Salto).
