During the lockdowns, the Dutch made massive use of flash delivery to get groceries at home at lightning speed. But now that shops and restaurants have reopened, consumers are becoming less enthusiastic, leading to a stagnation in growth. ABN AMRO reports this on the basis of debit card transactions.
According to the bank, delivery services Gorillas, Getir, Zapp and Flink have seen their sales explode 20-fold since the second half of last year. This is partly due to the lockdowns.
Spending “exploded” in the second half of last year, culminating in the months of January to March of this year, when the Netherlands was in lockdown. “Since April, the growth in total debit card expenditure on the four flash deliverers has stagnated,” the ABN researchers say. Investors have also become more cautious when it comes to flash delivery.
Flash delivery has been in the news in recent months. There is much to be said about the nuisance caused by couriers and the associated dark stores in the city. Darkstores are small local distribution centers of speed cameras, often with taped windows. More and more municipalities want to ban dark stores in the city center.
