Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said in the early hours of the night that air defense systems were in full swing to defend the city from Russian attacks. He indicated that an explosion was heard at 0.35 local time.
Explosions were also heard around Kiev after midnight, eyewitnesses told Reuters.
At the same time, the emergency services announced that the flight alert had been rolled out across the country. This went on for a couple of hours.
As the sirens sounded, some residents stepped out onto their balconies in Kiev. There they shouted “Glory to Ukraine, glory to the heroes,” according to the news agency.
Fragments of a rocket shot down by the Ukrainian Air Force were found on Sunday night. The fragments had damaged a car in central Kiev, but according to initial reports there were no deaths, injuries or other damage, the mayor said.
23 Russian objects were shot down during the night, according to the city’s military administration.
