Explosions and Emergencies: The Historical Mishaps of Russian Soyuz Rockets in Space

SPACE — On September 26, 1983, a Russian Soyuz rocket exploded on the launch pad. At the time of the incident, two cosmonauts, Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov, were on board the Soyuz T-10-1 spacecraft mounted on a rocket.

Titov and Strekalov barely made it out of the rocket alive. However, the explosive drama will make anyone shake their head.

The mission involving Titov and Strekalov aimed to launch cosmonauts from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the Salyut 7 space station. However, about 90 seconds before their rocket was supposed to launch, a fire broke out on the launch pad.

Luckily, the emergency system ejected their space capsule from atop the rocket, just two seconds before the fire caused an explosion.

On October 11, 2018, a Soyuz rocket carrying American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts also experienced a failure in flight. This forced the launch release system to pull the Soyuz capsule free of its damaged booster rocket.
