Explosion on Cargo Ship near Romanian Port of Sulina: Crew Evacuated

On Wednesday, September 20, near the port of Sulina, Romania, on a general cargo ship realizewhich sails under the flag of Togo, an explosion took place, as a result of which the crew of 12 was evacuated, according to what Romanian officials reported Reuters.

The ship was on its way to one of the ports on the Danube River in Ukraine. According to Romanian Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu, the exact cause of the explosion – whether it was a mine or engine room malfunction – is still unclear.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the Romanian Navy sent a sea minesweeper with divers to Sulin to look for mines.

It should be noted that since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the parties involved have laid mines in the Black Sea. Teams of military divers from Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey have been working to neutralize the mines that have drifted into their waters.
