The authorities said that an explosion occurred near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, India, on Tuesday, but did not result in deaths or injuries among the embassy employees, and added that investigations are underway to find out the causes of the explosion.
Officials are still combing the area, but it has reopened to the public. There was no information indicating that anyone in the street was injured.
Israel urged its citizens in India, and in New Delhi in particular, to be cautious. The Israeli National Security Council said in a statement issued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office that the explosion “may have been an attack.”
Israeli missions around the world have been placed on alert amid an escalation of anti-Semitic attacks since Israel launched its attack on the Gaza Strip.
“We can confirm that at approximately 5:20 (local time) an explosion occurred near the embassy,” Jay Nir, spokesman for the Israeli embassy, told Reuters.
He added that local police and security teams are conducting an investigation.
An official involved in the investigation told Reuters that a search operation three hours after the explosion resulted in nothing being found.
In January 2021, a small bomb exploded near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi without causing any casualties. An Israeli official said at the time that Israel was treating the explosion as a terrorist incident.
