A major explosion hit a chemical factory in the Spanish city of Tarragona around 6:45 pm (local time) this Tuesday. The facilities should belong to BASF, according to various media.
According to the newspaper La Voz de Galicia, the blast was seen in nearby cities and the noise was heard miles away from where the incident occurred.
Some nearby buildings were broken glass, but neither the Civil Protection nor the Catalonia Police (also known as Mossos d’Esquadra) confirmed the extent of the damage or the organization.
Spanish emergency services asked the population (from Tarragona, Salou, Vilaseca, Reus, Constantí, El Morell and La Conjona) to stay home and close their doors and windows. The Catalan Generalitat firefighters and emergency teams were relocated and the chemical emergency alert was triggered.
