Explosion in residential area in Strängnäs

The alarm about an explosion came shortly after four o’clock. A large area was cordoned off. Several police units, the national bomb disposal unit and the emergency services worked at the scene.

– The police are on the scene after some type of detonation in Strängnäs, partial evacuation is in progress. The important thing right now is to follow rescue personnel. An ambulance is on the scene, but we don’t know anything about personal injuries, says police spokesperson Angelica Forsberg shortly after the alarm.

The damage to the building is not said to be particularly serious, but a suspicious object was found on the ground nearby.

– Since there was a detonation in the area, we regarded the object as sharp. It will now be analysed, says Angelica Forsberg.

The incident is being investigated by the police as public dangerous destruction.

Does not exclude threaded connection

There have been several explosions in the Stockholm area recently. Several of them are linked to the conflict concerning the Foxtrot network. But it is still too early to say whether today’s incident is gang-related, according to the police. Nor do the police want to comment on possible connections to the numerous shootings and bombings in Nyköping last year.

– It is nothing we can comment on at this stage, but also not something we rule out, says Angelica Forsberg.

About 20 people evacuated

About twenty people had to leave their homes during the morning. Strängnäs municipality activated its support functions and opened a preschool nearby to support the evacuees.

– Many are cut. We have crisis support staff on site. They have received coffee and breakfast, says Patrik Jarenius, head of security in Strängnäs municipality.

The Prime Minister: “I hope you can come home soon”

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, whose hometown is Strängnäs, commented on the night’s explosions on Instagram:

“I think of all the Strängnäs residents in Dammen and Finninge who were forced to leave their homes at 04 last night, some had to climb out of the window. I know that many people are now helping and hope that you will be able to come home again soon”.

At 12.30 the police announced that the cordons in the area have been lifted.
