At least 12 emergency workers were injured in an explosion in an apartment building in the German city of Ratingen on Thursday, according to the police. Eight of them are in mortal danger. The 57-year-old apartment resident has been arrested. A body was found in his home.
Several firefighters and police officers were on the scene Thursday morning because of a fire in the apartment. When the rescuers opened the door of the house, they were blown backwards by an explosion.
After the first explosion, several small explosions were heard. They would, according to a reporter from the German newspaper BILD have come from a special unit of the police. That unit arrested the suspect after storming the house.
The man was found seriously injured in the home. It is unknown if he was injured during the raid or from the earlier explosion. A body was also found in the apartment, the police reported on Twitter. The identity of the deceased is not yet known.
Snipers were also involved in the arrest. They were ready on surrounding flats with their sights aimed at the house in question.
According to several media, the suspect is already wanted by the police. It would be a conspiracy thinker who lived in the house with his mother.
There is still a heavy police presence around the flat, say German reporters on site. Curious people are kept at a distance in the neighbourhood.
