At least seven people have died in an explosion and fire in southwestern France, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen said, Nova TV reported.
The blast took place in a small town in Saint Laurent du la Thessaloniki, in the western Pyrenees. 25 people were evacuated.
According to the local radio station “France Blue”, the explosion took place on the ground floor of the building at 1:30 am, in a grocery store in the city, which is near Perpignan.
Two of the dead were children and one was a baby, Darmanen said. The minister is traveling to the place, Reuters reports.
Gas cylinders were found near the affected building, but it is not yet clear whether they were the cause of the explosion or only exacerbated it.
Nearly 100 firefighters were mobilized during the night, and this morning the fire was contained. The building is still restricted.
