“Early this Wednesday morning, a fire was reported in a steel factory in the industrial zone of the municipality of Xaloztoc, with a result so far of 12 dead and one injured,” the local government reported in a statement published on its social networks. .
The accident occurred around 03:00 local time (0900 GMT) in a tower of the Grupo Simec company complex, in an industrial park located in the municipality of Xaloztoc, about 150 km east of Mexico City, he added.
Simec Group explained in a statement sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) that the factory recorded a “liquid steel spill with loss of life” that momentarily paralyzed its operations.
“The company deeply regrets the death of its collaborators in this accident and is reviewing the causes of it,” he said.
Grupo Simec is a subsidiary of Industrias CH, one of the main steel manufacturers in Mexico, which also has operations in Brazil, the United States and Canada.

The state government previously mentioned that an explosion had been recorded in a tower where the steel is poured, which would have had a reaction when coming into contact with water.
The authorities announced that the fire caused after the explosion has already been controlled and the supervision work has been completed to verify that there are no more risks.
The governor of Tlaxcala, Lorena Cuéllar, regretted the accident and said that her government is investigating whether the company that operates the factory had all its certifications in order.
“We are going to continue doing all the investigations into what caused the whole situation,” the official told reporters, who went to the place with members of her government to address the situation.
He added that the authorities will take between five and ten days to deliver the bodies of the deceased to their relatives because they must do DNA tests.
The area of the explosion remained cordoned off by security forces, while relatives of the workers had arrived to learn about their situation, reported Juvencio Nieto, head of Civil Protection of Tlaxcala.
Dozens of ambulances and patrol cars arrived at the scene after the accident, according to images from local television.
