Explosion at Manhattan Pizzeria Injures Con Edison Employee – NBC New York

A small gas explosion rocked a Manhattan neighborhood, leaving an employee burned in the aftermath.

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY, for its acronym in English), noted that a Con Edison employee was called to a pizzeria on Sunday afternoon in 4th Avenue near East 12th Street.

When he got to the boiler room and opened the door to investigate, the gas ignited and he suffered a sudden burn to his face, authorities said.

The FDNY said the man was checked at the scene and is expected to be fine.

What caused the gas leak and explosion is still under investigation.

Rescuers trying to enter the pizzeria, on the ground floor of a 20-story building, had to break the store’s front window to gain access to the restaurant.
