Residents of Oostenburgervoorstraat on the Eastern Islands were startled awake last night by the explosion at an HVO-Querido building. The building accommodates people with psychological or addiction problems.
There are 38 rooms, according to local residents the clients live on the upper floors and the supervisors are on the ground floor. Some clients were previously homeless or have committed a criminal offense. “I also know the location,” says a local resident. “I was there recently at a neighborhood barbecue. Really super nice people. It’s really just awful.”

“I talk to people sometimes, especially in the summer when they hang out the window,” says another. “Sometimes a bit of loud music comes out. But it also creates some excitement in the neighborhood. This neighborhood is mixed and I like that. A place like this is part of that.”
According to the police, heavy fireworks were probably used. After the explosion, witnesses saw a young man dressed in dark quickly cycling away in the direction of Nieuwe Oostenburgerstraat. Anyone with more information is asked to come forward.

The motive for the explosion is also a mystery to local residents. “I don’t know why they chose a place like this. Maybe it was an act of revenge. Or a threat, or I’ll get you back or something, on that order of magnitude.”
The police ask people who have more information about the perpetrator to come forward.
