RIVAL.co.id – Discovery of the World’s Eighth Continent: Getting to Know Zealandia, which is located below the Earth’s surface, turns out to be controversial.

According to maps and encyclopedias, we know seven broad plains (continents) on the surface of the Earth.

However, in 2017, a group of geologists announced a discovery that changed our view of Earth’s geography.

They discovered the eighth continent which became known as Zealandia or Te Riu-a-Maui in Maori.

This hidden continent has an area of 1.89 million square miles (about 4.9 million square kilometers), making it one of the largest continents in the world.

Its size is even about six times that of Madagascar, a large island that we are familiar with.

One of the famous countries located on the Zealandia continent is New Zealand.

However, what makes Zealandia very special is that most of this continent is located below sea level, about 94 percent to be precise.

Only a handful of islands, including New Zealand, are visible above sea level.
