Exploring Women’s Struggle for Recognition in Music History: Unveiling Female Professional Identity in Composers and Musicians

Women have often played second fiddle in music history. The social norms of the 19th century were also transferred to music. Nevertheless, a few women have managed to assert themselves in the male-dominated music world. It is precisely these women that Michaela Krucsay from the Graz University of Art and her colleague Lucia Agaibi is taking a closer look at in the project “The Musician’s Estate as Memory Storage”. Using autobiographical writings and papers from Luise Adolpha Le Beau, Ethel Smyth, Mary Dickenson-Auner, Elly Ney, Grete von Zieritz and her daughter, Hedi Gigler-Dongas, the two researchers attempt to identify the emergence of a female professional identity among female composers and professional musicians.
