Exploring Viticulture in Baden-Württemberg: Broom Time, Torchlight Hikes, and Wine Adventures

Viticulture shapes the landscape in Baden-Württemberg in many places. Steep slopes and rows of vines can also be explored on hikes in autumn, and in bad weather there are cozy restaurants and exciting exhibitions. Our current tips:

When the broom is hanging outside, things are cozy inside: now it’s broom time! Originally, winemaking families cleared out their living rooms to entertain guests with tasty house wines and hearty dishes and to empty the cellar for the new harvest. A broom was hung on the house or farm gate as a sign that the restaurant was temporarily open. Depending on the region, the rustic restaurants are also called ostrich or Rädleswirtschaft.

The torchlight around Weibertreu Castle takes place on October 28th. To fortify yourself on the three-and-a-half-hour hike, you will be served hearty winemaker’s pot and regional wines will be tasted. Information about the torchlight hike and other events in Heilbronner Land can be found here: heilbronnerland.de.

Under the motto “Mountain in Flames” we go up to the Großbottwarer Harzberg in the Bottwartal on October 31st. Wine and food stands provide variety along the way, fire baskets bathe the surroundings in mysterious light.

A tour with alpacas through the vineyard – a walk among the vines – covered wagon or carriage rides: wine adventure tours take place throughout Baden-Württemberg in late autumn. An overview with a filter function can be found here: weinerlebnistour.de

You can find out more about the history of viticulture in a viticulture museum. There are exhibitions relating to viticulture in the Pfedelbacher Viticulture Museum in Hohenlohe, in the Vineum Bodensee in Meersburg and in the Stuttgart Viticulture Museum in Stuttgart-Uhlbach, among others.
