Exploring Violence through Art: BAG1.1 Blow and International Biennial SACO1.1

The International Biennial of Contemporary Art SACO1.1 has opened its XI version with violence as its central theme, inviting visitors to reflect on the topic through art. The biennial, presented by Hidden | BHP and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, as well as the Government and Regional Council of Antofagasta, will showcase works by artists from around the world until September 14.

Dagmara Wyskiel, the director of SACO, explained that this year’s biennial aims to explore violence in all its aspects, not only to commemorate the victims but also to reflect on the past, build the future, and educate with the values of democracy and respect. She emphasized the importance of art in touching the sensitive chord within ourselves and allowing us to be moved, feel, and reflect.

Cristóbal Marshall, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Escondida | BHP, highlighted the role of art and culture in creating social value. Through their cultural program, the company aims to contribute to the comprehensive development of the community by promoting access to high-level art that fosters the generation of an audience, the development of capacities, and the formation of critical thinking.

Claudio Lagos, Seremi of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, emphasized the significance of holding a Contemporary Art Biennial in the region. He praised the eleven-year effort of SACO in generating a space for creative explosion, development, and dissemination to the community. He also urged reflection on the loss of loved ones, forced disappearance, torture, and the violation of fundamental human rights that occurred during the 50th anniversary of the Coup d’état.

The exhibitions of the SACO Biennial will revolve around the concept of violence. The opening day featured the exhibition “ancient and eternal body” by artists Nikolett Balázs and Štefan Papčo, curated by Richard Gregor. The exhibition explores different types of memory, including human and social memory.

Additionally, the exhibition “FileSACO” was inaugurated, presenting and compiling the work of the Biennial over its eleven years of existence. The exhibition will remain open at the Fundación Minera Escondida Art Room until September 14.

The community is also invited to join the SACO1.1 program, which includes the inauguration of an exhibition in the Ruins of Huanchaca Cultural Park featuring works by national and international artists.
