Exploring the Writings of Filmmakers: Discovering Perspectives on Cinema, Art, and the World

When he maintained that “writing about cinema is already making it,” Godard did not distinguish between writing and the act of making films. Approaching the work of a filmmaker through his writings can give us new perspectives on his work and his vision of cinema, art and the world.

This course is dedicated to the discovery and analysis of a series of texts on avant-garde, experimental or documentary cinema, signed by filmmakers-essayists such as Germaine Dulac, the visionary José Val del Omar or the theorist Hito Steyerl. These authors were interested not only in issues related to cinema, but also in disciplines such as literature, philosophy, history, politics, science, technology, pedagogy, dance or the plastic arts. Guided reading and interpretation of his writings will make it possible to delve deeper into his work and his vision.

The teaching staff of the course are made up of various specialists in the subject, some of whom are also editors or translators of the texts that they will analyze in their respective classes, or have recently curated exhibitions on these authors.
