Exploring the Wreckage of Pablo Escobar’s Drug Transport Plane in the Bahamas

The wreckage of a plane that crashed while transporting drugs for notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar has been at the bottom of the ocean off the Bahamas for 43 years.

The Curtiss C-46 Commando took off from the runway on November 15, 1980 and crashed into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Photographer Ken Keefer took a series of photographs of the wreckage. Kiefer specializes in underwater photography and is known for his unique images.

Looming above the water in the shoals on the south side of Norman’s Cay, this plane is shrouded in myth and legend. The story has been told and retold so many times that it is difficult to separate fact from fiction.

For years, the tiny island was at the epicenter of the news for the drug smuggling ring. The planes landed on the small artificial runway believed to have been built by Pablo Escobar himself to refuel before continuing their journey to the US to drop off their illegal cargo.

He and cartel co-founder Carlos Leder established a new attachment point in the Bahamas on the island of Normans Cay, located about 350 km southeast of the coast of Florida.

According to another version, Escobar and the American Robert Vesco bought most of the island, including the 1-kilometer airstrip, port, hotel, boats and houses. They build a refrigerated warehouse to store the cocaine. In the period 1978-1982, this was the main drug route for the Medellin Cartel, writes “Focus”
