This year, the topics of timber construction and wood were the focus of a round table organized by RegionalMedien Steiermark in cooperation with the state guild for timber construction in the Styria Media Tower in Graz. A south-eastern Styrian explains why an apprenticeship in the industry can simply do more.
SOUTH EAST STYRIA. Wood is simply versatile and sustainable. That conclusion was reached this year in a panel of experts from RegionalMedien Steiermark in cooperation with the State Guild of Wood Construction in Graz. One of the topics was apprenticeship training.
“Wood is great”
Dominik Fasching is pursuing an apprenticeship as a carpenter with great passion: “The apprenticeship is just right for me. I spend a lot of time outdoors, do what I enjoy and also earn my own money.” The second year apprentice from Kapfenstein is absolutely enthusiastic about wood as a material: “Wood is great, you can make almost anything out of it and it simply looks beautiful.”
But what does a carpenter actually do? “We work with the raw wood, so to speak, making things like roof trusses, carports and terraces.” Fasching emphasizes that a certain head for heights and physical strength are of course an advantage.
Poly as a guide
Actually, the soon to be 17-year-old wanted to be a mechanic, but when he came into contact with wood at the Polytechnic School in Feldbach, he knew immediately that it would lead towards an apprenticeship as a carpenter.
It then also fitted right away at the Puchleitner company in Mühldorf near Feldbach. After getting a taste of things there, he is now pursuing an apprenticeship at the leading regional company. The working atmosphere is great and – of course, this also applies to the support and training.
And what does Fasching do in his free time? He likes to work on his drums or just spend time with his friends or girlfriend. And, of course – smaller jobs with wood should not be neglected outside of the job
