It was an open secret for years that the Boxster and Cayman models could use a really decent engine, because turbocharged four-cylinders did not gain many fans. In 2016, the great Cayman GT4 came with a six-cylinder engine from the 911 Carrera S model, the successor to the 718 Cayman GT4 featured a flat six-cylinder with a volume of exactly 4 liters. Nevertheless, ardent enthusiasts have been asking for a long time whether there will also be a full-fat version with the engine from the 911 GT3. And we waited until the top iteration of the Cayman was created – the GT4 RS model.
The selection of the best cars of 2022 by a certain Jeremy Clarkson also confirms that it was the right move on the part of Zuffenhausen. Not to mention the sold-out quotas and astronomical prices of this model at resellers. But what are we talking about, the Cayman GT4 RS is a circuit saw created for uncompromising performance on the circuit, ideally in the Green Hell. But in the open twin 718 Boxster Spyder RS, the goal will be the drive itself rather than the fastest lap times.
However, the main attraction of the open version will be the sound. Thanks to the absence of a fixed roof, the naturally aspirated flat six-cylinder unleashes an absolutely famous high-revving orchestra – it is the same drivetrain that makes a big show in the coupe version. So the four-liter still gives a full 500 horsepower, thanks to which the acceleration from standstill to 100 takes the same 3.4 seconds.
However, it was far from just cutting the rear pillars of the roof. Along with them, the cooling air inlets to the engine disappeared, which had to be pulled out onto the fenders right next to the crew’s ears, so the sound experience will be very intense. The roof as such is also 7.5 kg lighter than that of the original Boxster Spyder, a saving of 16 kg compared to the electric roof of the civilian Boxster.
Another subject of modifications was the chassis. The people from Zuffenhausen wisely decided to replace the uncompromisingly stiff, circuit setting with a slightly more civil variant – the suspension and shock absorbers were softer, but the PASM adaptive suspension remains the same as in the case of the coupe version.
The softer suspension has been offset by a reduction in downforce – the large downforce wing from the Cayman GT4 RS has been removed to the eternal hunting grounds and replaced by a ducktail style spoiler. This significantly reduced the downforce on the rear axle, so for the sake of aerodynamic balance, the engineers also reduced a little downforce on the front axle – the front bumper splitter is thus a bit more discreet.
As in the case of the coupe, carbon-ceramic brakes or a titanium sports exhaust are still standard here, but lightweight magnesium alloy wheels are an extra charge. In any case, the Boxster Spyder RS rips to a top speed of up to 315 km/h to an unmistakable soundtrack peaking at 9,000 rpm.
Porsche says it has no plans to limit production to a strict number of units, but admits one limiting factor is the availability of carbon parts. But honestly, with a price tag of 151,000 euros (approx. 3.6 million CZK), the Boxster Spyder RS model should never have been a dime a dozen.
