Exploring the Thriving Warhammer 40,000 Community: Tournaments, Storytelling, and a Rich Hobby Experience

Warhammer 40,000 is set in a fictional future in the year 40,000. It is a strategy and role-playing game that came out 30 years ago and is the largest of its kind.

– By estimation, several millions must be playing around the world. We have 1,200 active tournament players in Sweden, but we think there are about 50,000 people who have models and are active to some extent, says Jesper Unander-Scharin.

Jesper, together with others, has started Veizla, which basically means a country festival in Old Norse, the group that organizes the SM this year.

– We saw that there was a big division in the community in Sweden, there was no gathering place, so we wanted to help players to find each other and find tournament games, he says.

The Swedish champion Björn Eriksson will not only receive an honor but also a ticket to the WC in Atlanta in November this year.

Multiple ways to enter

There are many ways to become part of the Warhammer community. Many people eat the stories around the game, for example around 300 books have been published about the fictional world.

A big part is the figures themselves, you buy them and paint them yourself. Careful and timely work.

That’s enough for some, but for others you can also meet on the battlefield against other forces. Matches at the tournament are limited to three hours of play but can go on for around six hours.
