Before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, the Tagus River (Tejo in Portuguese) crosses the Portuguese region of Lisboa offering multiple possibilities for entertainment and leisure, such as boat trips at sunset, bird watching or a tour along its shore to the famous Torre de Belém, among others.
Varino Boat Liberty. Walking along the Tejo River on this iconic sailboat, with capacity for 40 people, is a unique experience due to its great historical and cultural value. It is one of the nine examples of this type of ship that exist in the world and, originally, it was used to transport goods.
In 1988, the Vila Franca de Xira City Council recovered the boat and transformed it into what is now a Museum Center for educational purposes, where you can enjoy the natural beauties that the Tejo River offers.
Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve. This protected area, made up of more than 14,000 hectares, was created in 1976 and is the largest wetland in the country and one of the most relevant in Europe. It is an essential refuge for numerous species during their migration from northern Europe to Africa, regularly hosting some 50,000 waterfowl.
It is an unavoidable stop when visiting Lisbon, a different way of getting to know the region from a much more natural perspective. Some of its main attractions are the thousands of flamingos that visit it every year, which make up a true visual spectacle; the Salinas do Samouco, located at the mouth of the river; and the Bird Conservation and Observation Area, with various activities and guided tours.
Riverside Linear Park of the Tagus Estuary. It is a park of more than six kilometers in length, made up of pedestrian and cycling paths, where it is possible to connect with the nature that surrounds the Estuário do Tejo and, at the same time, enjoy a wide range of leisure activities: children’s playground, cafeteria, outdoor sports areas and bird observatory, among others.
Likewise, in the park you can find the “A Póvoa eo Rio” Museum Center, where it is possible to relive the history of the past civilizations that inhabited the Lisbon territory, as well as the activities they carried out such as salt extraction, river transport or fishing.
Walk along the banks of the Tejo. One of the mandatory walks in Lisbon is the route from Praça do Comércio to the Torre de Belém. There are several ways to do it: by tram, boat, bus, bicycle or on foot, and what they all have in common are wonderful views of the Tejo river throughout the journey.
The most common way to travel is by tram number 15, leaving at the Cais do Sodré station. There are other points of tourist interest along the way, such as the Docas, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) or the Padrão dos Descobrimentos.
boat trip at sunset. One of the activities most chosen by tourists in Lisbon is a boat trip on the Tejo River at sunset. There is a wide range of boats that operate in the South and Southeast stations and that offer this experience to families, friends or couples who want to live a unique memory. Many of them complete the experience with a gastronomic and/or wine offer on board.
The excursion can last up to two hours, in which a local guide informs passengers of the tourist attractions that can be seen from the boat. Without a doubt, it may be the most suitable option for a romantic getaway on the Lisbon coast.
