History of Sacramento, Coahuila

Sacramento Township is rich in legend and history. It is believed that when priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was apprehended, he was taken to Chihuahua in the place called “El Peñón” where he officiated a mass, so it is thought that the name of the municipality comes from this act.

Sacramento was founded by 60 people in 1842 under the name of “Villa Nueva”; 20 years later he was elevated to the category of Villa, by decree of the Government of the State of Nuevo León and Coahuila. At that time, Coahuila was annexed to that state and it was not until 1864 that President Benito Juárez issued the decree making Coahuila independent from Nuevo León.

Sacramento’s famous ‘milk cone’

Over the years, the burnt milk cone has become a symbolic sweet for the central region of the state of Coahuila, more specifically in the municipality of Sacramento where dozens of families go out to sell them every day.

Despite the fact that Sacramento is the smallest municipality in Coahuila, since before sunrise, families settle on the banks of federal highway 30 and take advantage of the passage of truckers, motorists and tourists to offer different products such as empanadas, muéganosmilk sweets but the burnt milk cone stands out among them.

In 2019, the first event dedicated to this food was held, the ‘Cone Fair’. Where more than 35 merchants offered not only milk cones, but also other foods such as cheese, chorizo ​​and more typical sweets.
