Exploring the Relationship to Nature and Jean Giono’s ‘That Remains My Joy’ at the Avignon Festival

What is your relationship to nature?

Clara Hédouin: “When I was little, I was used to running, playing, investing in wild spaces because I grew up in La Roque-sur-Cèze (Gard). The outside was a refuge. Nature for me is a natural environment in which it is natural to live and act. In recent years, this very primitive, instinctive relationship with nature has been coupled with an awareness of the climate emergency in which we live. What we call nature, even with a capital N, we consider it as a domain external to us, but it is not because our bodies, what we are, we are of Nature, we are of the living. The living is interesting to replace the word Nature because it puts us back in the center among the other living things. This way of seeing things is evolving today and redefining Nature. »

You are used to shows outside the theatre. How was born That remains my joy your new epic faithful to Jean Giono?

CH: “Indeed, I was used to working outside. And I liked it, both because I come from there and also because the theater outside is put to the test because there are plenty of elements that come its way: the heat, the wind, the insects… the life around still continues. And so we come to meet something that is already there. And the artistic team expands to a much larger community with people who might never have been to the theater. And that’s what led me to invest in landscapes and to use Giono, who is a magnificent poet. »

What messages do you want to convey to viewers?

CH: “…Awakening attention to invisible things. »

What is your first memory of the theatre?

CH: “It was when my mother took me to see shows for young audiences at the Festival d’Avignon…”

What image do you have of the Avignon Festival?

CH: “For me, it’s actually quite a happy place. Even if it can sometimes be quite ambiguous when you’re an artist because you meet so many other directors, it’s hard not to feel the competition. It’s a place that puts so much pressure… I saw magic shows there that I still remember. There is also the history of this place with Jean Vilar and the first experiences from outside, even if they have existed since the Greeks. But to include in French theater this sort of tradition in the courtyard of honor and the birth of this notion of popular theatre… This heritage must be taken care of because there is a nobility in this formula which must be preserved and all the time to question and seek to renew. »

May my joy remain from July 17 to 24 (Holiday on July 20 and 21) at 6 a.m. in Barbentane. Duration 6 h 30 including breaks.
