While in Cologne for Gamescom 2023, we had the chance to go hands-on with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II. We recently posted a preview of the experience, but to add to that, we also caught up with Saber Interactive’s Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick to learn more about the action sequel.
In that interview, we asked Hollis-Lake about how development manages the power fantasy of being a deadly Space Marine.
Hollis-Lake says: “We have one of the most fearsome fighters in the Warhammer 40,000 galaxy, so we need an equally fearsome enemy. So it’s about balancing what it feels like to be strong enough to leap over hundreds of enemies in one step, but not feel like that So easy. So we have great weapons like chain swords and bolt rifles, some nice grenades mixed in with the old hack and hack of melee combat.
Following this, we asked about the difficulty of the game and how it would be presented and delivered in Space Marine 2.
Hollis-Leeck continued: “Like in World War Z, you have levels of difficulty, but within those levels there’s a spectrum that the AI director can take you through. So it’s always looking to see how well you handle threats. If You’re doing well, it makes you work harder, and if you’re having a hard time, it relaxes a little bit. So that’s your bracket, really.
