Exploring the Layers of the Earth: Inner Core to Outer Core

TribunJogja.com – Starting from the center, the Earth has four layers.

Inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust, from deepest to shallowest.

These layers have never been examined except for the crust.

The deepest human drilled hole is over 12 kilometers. Even that took 20 years.

1. Inner core

The radius of this dense metal ball is 1,220 kilometers, or about three-quarters of that of the moon.

This is located between 6,400 and 5,180 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. It is very dense and mainly consists of iron and nickel.

The planet’s inner core rotates slightly faster than the rest of the world. It’s also very hot, with temperatures reaching 5,400° Celsius.

That’s almost as hot as the surface of the sun. The pressure here is enormous: more than 3 million times higher than on the surface of the Earth.

According to some studies, there may be a deeper inner core. Most likely made almost entirely of iron.

2. Outer core

This part of the core also consists of iron and nickel, but in liquid form. It lies between 5,180 and 2,880 kilometers below the surface.

This liquid, heated in large part by the radioactive decay of the isotopes of uranium and thorium, moves in huge chaotic currents.

This movement causes an electric current to flow. In turn, they generate the Earth’s magnetic field.
