Exploring the Intrigue and Twists in HBO’s “The Idol” Episode 2: Dyanne’s Villainous Turn and Tedros’ Plan

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for The Idol Episode 2.There’s a lot of talk about the new Sunday night show on HBO, The idol. The new series, creatively animated by Sam Levinson et Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, has faced quite a bit of controversy since its inception, many of which have to do with the direction of the show not being one to hold back its sexualization. behind it all, The idol has since given us two episodes where there were plenty of sensual scenes ranging from voyeurism to suffocation. Yet when the camera doesn’t fixate on it all, The idol has quietly woven into an interesting story. While Jocelyne (Lily-Rose Depp) and its attached pop stardom remain front and center, the second episode presented us with a twist that sets up a much more interesting narrative than originally thought.

Over the first two episodes, there’s been a surplus of characters introduced to this chaotic world, many of them part of Jocelyn’s team. Diana (Jennie Ruby Jane), who is one of Jocelyn’s backup dancers, may not have seemed harmful after the first episode, but the development that unfolded in the second episode suggests that she’s as much of an antagonist as Tedros. Tedros (Tesfaye). With Dyanne in Tedros’ plan (it’s still unclear what this cult is all about), The idol gave us a character that we were led to believe had good intentions but in reality all we saw of her was a calculated approach with the hopes of dethroning Jocelyn.

Jocelyn meets Tedros because of Dyanne

The aforementioned harmfulness that seemed to emanate from Dyanne in Episode 1 was more than likely part of the larger plan. Again, we meet Dyanne as Jocelyn’s friend, who extends the invitation to Tedros’ club in a way that feels like she’s watching over her. We’ve all had a friend who put us down and invited us for a night out on the town. That’s exactly what Dyanne is doing here. Seeing that Jocelyn is nearing a breaking point with the loss of her mother and the stress placed on her, Dyanne (and presumably Tedros) sees that now is the time to strike. It was then at the club that the two co-leaders first met, but looking back, it was a planned tactic. We don’t know through two episodes what Tedros’ intentions are with Jocelyn. Is he trying to disrupt his musical career? Is it just having power over someone he’s looking for? Either way, seeing Dyanne become part of Tedros’ little community in episode 2 gives this first encounter with her a very different tone.

We may begin to wonder how far back Dyanne’s sabotage methods go. We don’t have much to go on, but we do know that Jocelyn considers her a superior dancer to her, as she bluntly tells her in the first episode. Likewise, she sees Chloe (Suzanna Son) in a similar light when she tells Tedros after hearing her sing how powerful and talented her voice is. Maybe it speaks to the plan he concocts if he truly seeks to break Jocelyn down, so he can rebuild her in his own vision. By surrounding her with people he believes (and she believes) are superior to her in some way, she will begin to question herself.

Dyanne’s mean turn speaks more to this Tedros plan

Due to her dancing prowess, Dyanne catches the eye of Nikki Katz (Jane Adams) who demands to hear her song as she begins to find an alternate route if and when Jocelyn dies out. We know Tedros is thrilled to hear that Dyanne has finally caught Nikki’s eye as he tells her at the club. If Dyanne is set to replace Jocelyn as the next mega-pop star, Jocelyn’s demise could come sooner than it seems. Seeing that Jocelyn considers Dyanne a friend, seeing her knock her down would surely be enough to throw her fully into Tedros’ arms. From this account, it makes sense that Tedros would consider Dyanne so high in his worship because she has the talent and charisma to break Jocelyn to a point where he can bring her back. Now that Nikki seems to see that too, it’s only a matter of time before Dyanne has a real opportunity to prove her potential in front of the label.

While The idol is far from a perfect show, the turn we see in Dyanne is one that creates a lot of tension and drama. The seeds were planted for this old friend to be solely responsible for Jocelyn reaching her breaking point. The show still remains directionless in terms of what exactly Tedros’ endgame is here, but seeing Dyanne as one of his followers (and clearly just as involved with him as Jocelyn is after hearing her mention the sex) finally gives us a clue what Tedros is trying to do in The idol. There’s a lot of intrigue created by this little moment as we can now clarify what he’s trying to do with Jocelyn. Whether it’s to break her down so she has recourse to him or to feel more powerful over her, using Dyanne as the driving force under her nose suggests that her calculations are all meant to hurt Jocelyn. Even having Izaak (Moses Sumney) mingle with Joss’ best friend and assistant, Leia (Rachel Sennott) further supports his plan. Surrounding those under her influence around Jocelyn will be enough to win her over at some point in the near future.

The first two episodes of The idol are available to stream on Max. New episodes of The idol out every Sunday night on HBO.
