Exploring the Historic Tram Via: From Grenoble to Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte

Did you know that a electric tram allowed to connect Grenoble To Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte at about 1,200 m altitude? This line, built in 1909 and operated until 1951 then made it possible to reach Lans-en-Vercors and Villard-de-Lans. Since July 6the official date of its inauguration, this historic route has been renamed Via you tram. The rails have disappeared to give way to a hiking route To pied, To VTT or on horseback.

Development of the tram Via between Grenoble and Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte

This development project was piloted by the Metropolis of Grenoble and the Community of communes of the Vercors massif in partnership with the Vercors Regional Natural Park, the Joint Union for Mobility in the Grenoble area (Smmag) and the Department of Isere. The cost of the project amounts to approximately 200 000 eurosfinanced to the tune of 110,000 euros by the European Union, 50,000 euros by the Department of Isère and 40,000 euros by Grenoble Alpes Métropole.

The end result takes the form of a route of some 38 km, with 1,240 m of cumulative elevation gain, in several loops and in conjunction with the Via Vercors. For mountain bikers, the current route (with a lot of big stones on the way) is intended for a rather sporty public. A second phase of the projectcurrently being validated, aims to achieve amenities in order to make certain portions more accessible au grand public.

The first phase of the project, which was carried out for an amount of 200,000 euros, consisted of create the route and at the tag. five panels relay information services were installed at the five entry points to the route (Karl-Marx park on the border between Fontaine and Seyssinet-Pariset, Vouillants Pré Faure and Pariset station in Seyssinet-Pariset, Pré Nouvel in Seyssins and Saint-Nizier- du-Moucherotte). 17 heritage panels recounting the history and heritage linked to the route were also disseminated. Finally, note the purchase of electric hybrid bikes which will be offered to the location by theVISITOR CENTER from Grenoble Alpes (Grenoble Alpes Tourisme).
