Exploring the Fascinating World of Paleontology: An Interview with Anaëlle Kocher

Anaëlle Kocher, can you introduce yourself and explain where your passion for paleontology comes from?

A. K. : “I have just finished a degree in geology in Angers. I am going to do a master’s degree in paleontology in Lille to do a thesis afterwards. My goal is to become a paleontologist. It is a desire that I have had since I was very young with the love of dinosaurs. I have simply followed my path since I was a child. “

What are you organizing on Wednesday July 26 and Friday July 28 at the Museum?

A. K. “Wednesday’s conference will focus on paleoenvironments, so ancient environments. We will see how can we reconstitute these with the geological clues that we find on the ground, quite simply. This will show how scientists, with the rocks, the fossils on site, will interpret these clues to make an environment. On Friday, we are organizing a self-service stand on fossilization from A to Z. is no longer a living being but a mineral element.”

For example, the one I’m going to present on Wednesday is 150 million years old.

Can you define more precisely the term “paleoenvironment” that you will address during your conference?

A. K. “It’s an ancient environment. For example, the one I’m going to present on Wednesday is 150 million years old. It’s a time when dinosaurs lived. We’re going to try to reconstruct it with the different parameters, whether biological or geological.”

What work were you able to do during your internship at the museum during the month of July?

A. K. “I was able to prospect with excavations on the ring road, walking along the road, during work to try to find fossils. What we brought back, I was able to clean them and do what is called clearance on certain fossils. We clean them properly with a hammer pen. I identified some. Then we placed them to put them in the museum collection and protect them. “

We can also have unique species, which we must protect in the context of subsequent studies.

How does this fit into the missions of the Museum, these studies in paleontology?

Alexandre Radix, in charge of the geological collections of the Museum : “In the Cher, we have the particularity of being in limestone and marble areas which date from the Jurassic, so 150 million years ago. This space is very rich in fossils, it is important to prospect this environment because we are going to find a lot of things. This is part of our missions, both to protect material that we already have while bringing in local and recent geological heritage. can also have unique species, which must be protected in the context of further studies for the paleontologists who examine these lands so that they have reference material.

What types of fossils do we mainly find in the Cher?

A. R. : “Many bivalves, including mussels, ammonites, sea urchins, corals and large marine reptiles, plesiosaurs, which lived in the time of the dinosaurs. Be careful, these remain reptiles and not dinosaurs.”

Lecture for all audiences “How can we reconstruct a paleoenvironment with geological clues”: Wednesday 26 July at 6.30 p.m. at the Bourges Natural History Museum. “Fossilization from A to Z” stand: Friday July 28 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Bourges Natural History Museum.
