We tried the first public beta of watchOS 10, here are the most interesting news
A big innovation is the set of widgets hidden under the watch face
The new design of a whole range of native applications is also a pleasant refresh
Apple has finally made up its mind, and as of Wednesday evening, the public beta version of the new operating systems iOS, macOS and of course watchOS, in this particular case version 10, is available. If you haven’t been brave enough to try watchOS 10 in the developer beta, now you can your time has come. What functions do we definitely recommend you try on your watch?
Brand new controls and widgets
Immediately after the first launch of the Apple Watch with the beta version of watchOS 10, a quite practical guide to the redesigned controls will jump out at you. The basic change is that the side button under the digital crown does not launch the panel of popular applications, but the control center, which until now was called up by swiping up from the bottom.
After clicking on the digital crown, the application menu opens. However, it no longer resembles a honeycomb, but a significantly clearer list of applications that can be scrolled down and up. However, the most important innovation in watchOS 10 is the widget sets.
You can get to them by swiping your finger or by turning the crown on the main dial from bottom to top. In the morning, cards representing individual applications will appear, so you can immediately find out how many degrees it is outside, how you are doing with your daily activity, or quickly start playing a podcast or counting down the minute. Of course, you can edit the widgets, just like on the desktop in iOS.
Mental health care
Although there wasn’t much space devoted to mental health care during the watchOS 10 presentation at WWDC 2023, this feature found its way into the first public beta version of watchOS 10. Just open Mindfulness in the application menu and click on State of Mind.
You can then fill in a short 1-minute questionnaire either how you feel right now or how you felt throughout the day. With the digital crown, you can adjust whether you perceive your mood as neutral, pleasant or negative. In the last step, you state what emotions and feelings you feel. In the Health application on your iPhone, you can then review your emotional fluctuations throughout the day.
New dials
The first beta version of watchOS 10 only offers a pair of new watch faces for all users. One of them is Snoopy, a watch face with the legendary dog from the Peanuts comic. Snoopy enlivens the daily schedule with various cheerful antics and fun animations depending on the weather, season and the like. “In honor of the Sunday cartoons, the background color changes every full hour on Sundays,” warns Apple.
The second new watch face – Palette – is more for fans of art and abstract patterns. The focus is on changing colors during the day and unlike Snoopy, Paleta can set one complication in each of the four corners of the watch.
Fresh design of popular applications
Another design refresh is, in addition to two new watch faces, a redesign of popular native applications. The weather will offer a stylish overview of all possible values, similar to the iPhone. The Apple Music music application has rounder edges and visibly more pleasant controls. The compass, minute hand and stopwatch also have a new look.
You can now get much more detailed information from the Fitness and Exercise apps. In particular, the screen during exercise has undergone an extensive innovation, which also includes heart rate zones. A great novelty is also the possibility to “stream” the exercise screen to the display of the connected iPhone.
