Exploring the Enormous Labyrinth of Night on Mars: Stunning Video Reveals Martian Valleys, Craters, and Grabens

SPACE — A thrilling new video takes us flying through the enormous Labyrinth of Night on Mars. It is a very steep and long valley system the size of Italy.

The intersecting valleys of Noctis Labyrinthus, which in Latin means Night Labyrinth, are 30 kilometers wide and 6 km deep. In the video released by the European Space Agency (ESA), we can also see craters, large debris from landslides and sand dunes caused by blowing sand.

The video also shows strange geological features called grabens, which are signs of plate tectonics. “These stretch marks are parts of the Martian crust that have been compressed and cracked due to volcanic activity,” ESA officials said in a statement.

The simulated video was created using data from Europe’s Mars Express satellite, which arrived at the Red Planet in December 2003 and has been taking photos ever since. The mission made major contributions to our knowledge of the geology and atmosphere of Mars.

Mars Express also takes fantastic photos to inspire space lovers of all ages. Its images can show features as small as 10 meters across on the surface of Mars. In fact, the mission team recently put together a new mosaic image covering the entire surface of Mars to celebrate the spacecraft’s 20th anniversary.

Both the mosaic and the new Labyrinth of Night video were created with images from Mars Express’ High Resolution Stereo Camera. In addition to taking full-color images, it also maps the surface in 3D, providing depth to the topography shown in the video.

The Earth has tectonic plates, so it also has a handle as seen in the video. We can find it in Canyonlands National Park or explore it in Death Valley, which is also a large graben. Source: Live Science
