If the Czechoslovak Film Weekly is an unfamiliar concept to you, then know that it is a cycle of journalistic short films, which until 1989 brought the events of the previous week closer to moviegoers. It was broadcast before the start of the main movie. According to wikipedia, 2379 episodes were filmed.
Most of the episodes consisted of several reports, but occasionally the weekly magazine devoted itself to a single topic. Like, for example, the 40th episode in 1985, which focused entirely on the Škoda brand.
In 1985, the Mladoboleslav company celebrated 80 years since the start of car production, which was the main reason for the creators of the Czechoslovak Film Weekly to devote a complete, approximately 10-minute long segment to Škoda.
Today, this episode is a magical trip back in time, when our country was ruled by a centrally planned economy directed by a single political party.
The report offers a unique look behind the scenes of the largest domestic car manufacturer, from several angles. Lovers of classic Škoda cars will surely appreciate just the wonderful shots of the cars of the time or the driving of the motorsport novelty of the time – Škoda 130 LR.
We can also look into production, for example, the weekly magazine highlights the car company’s progress in the field of anti-corrosion protection and shows how the production process reduces the risk of rust attack. “This highly effective and efficient method is being introduced in Europe for the first time in large-scale production precisely in our Škoda car,” it even sounds in the report.
It is fast and sits well on the road
Owners’ opinions on Škoda cars are also interesting. Most of them praise them, while among the positives, for example, claims that the Škoda is “fast and comfortable” or that it “fits well on the road” can be heard. However, one owner criticizes the higher noise level.
Part of the report is devoted to sales – both domestically and abroad. The then commercial deputy emphasizes the popularity of the Škoda brand in Denmark and also names new territories where Czechoslovak cars began to be sold – Turkey and Canada.

Knowing what was going on after 1985, there is also an extremely interesting mention of a “New Generation Skoda”. The weekly, referring to sources in Mladá Boleslav, invites viewers to a “pleasant surprise”.
