Exploring the Coen Brothers’ Latest Films: ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ and ‘Tragedy of Macbeth’

The American directing duo Ethan & Joel Coen are known for the diverse range of film genres they have directed, from crime and comedy to drama and westerns. With their unique directing style of dark situations and black humor mixed with absurdist situations, they have made several great films, including Oscar winners.

Now the brothers also work separately. Joel Coen’s Shakespeare adaptation with Denzel Washington in 2021, Tragedy of Macbeth. Ethan Coen is now in cinemas with his wife Tricia Cooke Drive-Away Dolls released. This includes contemporary crime and drama with a touch of B-movie. Still typical of the Coens, if you ask us.

In Drive-Away Dolls stars Margaret Qualley (known from Once in Hollywood in Poor things) as the free-spirited Jamie, while Geraldine Viswanathan plays her best friend Marian. After Jamie’s relationship with his girlfriend Sukie (played by Feldstein) ends, Jamie decides to take some time for himself. So she joins Marian on a road trip to Tallahassee, Florida, in a Dodge Aries rented from a rental company run by a stock guy (played by Bill Camp). Jamie is determined to help Marian find the man, but the road trip is not without obstacles. The two discover an unpleasant surprise in the trunk of the Dodge, while some clumsy criminals are after them.

Especially if you’re a fan of the entire Coen brothers repertoire Drive-Away Dolls recommended. It’s not a masterpiece, but that doesn’t apply to the spy genre either. It’s a light Coen film, which you shouldn’t take too seriously. Need more from the Coen brothers? Then watch these movies (which don’t always need attention):

Burning After Reading (2008)

Burning After Reading may be the most similar to Drive-Away Dolls, even if it’s because of an overabundance of lame humor. In this hilarious espionage story, the memories of a bloody CIA officer fall into the hands of two gym workers (Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand), who are delighted to take advantage of the discovery.

Fargo (1996)

A pregnant Minnesota police chief (Frances McDormand) searches for two criminals who committed a series of murders, while a fraudulent insurance salesman takes the opportunity to cash in on the their crimes.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, this film follows the hunt for a man who finds a briefcase of money after a drug deal gone wrong, leading to a violent conflict between several characters in Texas. Also one of the the best Oscar movies of all time.

The big Lebowski (1998)

True Grit (2010)

A young woman hires a rugged US Marshal to avenge her father’s killing in the Wild West, leading to an exciting journey through the rugged landscape of the American frontier.
