On the occasion of the global climate strike, it is estimated that up to 2,000 people gathered in Zurich on Friday evening in summer weather. The approved rally started on Limmatquai between Central and Rudolf-Brun-Brücke and led across Bahnhofstrasse towards Helvetiaplatz.
Families with children, older people, young people – people from all generations were there: members of the Green Party or Velodemo activists. “We are here, we are loud because our future is being stolen!” they chanted. They followed the call of the Climate Strike Zurich group. Climate demonstrations took place around the world on Friday. This is, among other things, in response to the “disaster summer” with extreme weather events such as the flood disaster in Libya.
Children could also be seen at the demonstration.

The activists also demanded that the consumption of fossil fuels be stopped and that no more new fossil power plants be built.
The last global climate strike attracted thousands of people to the streets in Zurich in March. Despite the best weather, the large number of participants failed to attend on Friday. Around 6,500 people took part at a total of eight demo locations across Switzerland. The climate demonstration in Zurich is said to have been the last for the time being.
As Cyrill Hermann from the Zurich climate strike told this editorial team, demos are currently of little use. In the coming months, the focus will be on a “climate action plan” with specific demands for Zurich and the whole of Switzerland.
