Exploring the Bronx Children’s Museum: A Delightful Experience for Little April and Her Mom

Little one-year-old April enjoys the Bronx Children’s Museum with her mom.

“I am here a lot in the nest, as she is 1 year old, this area is from 0 to 3 years old, and she loves everything, she looks at everything in amazement and doesn’t know what to do first,” said mother Mélida Pérez-Maldonado .

The museum, which pays full attention to The Bronx, its surroundings, its people and its culture, opened its doors last December.

The venue is a 13,500-plus-square-foot building that was a former power station built in 1925 along the Harlem River.

“The Children’s Museum is a celebration of humanity,” said Denise Adusei, executive director, Bronx Children’s Museum.

One of the great themes of the installation is water, which connects us all.

“Here’s a replica of the Harlem River, and the kids can play in the water, and they can see the Harlem River, too,” Adusei added.

The museum has different interactive game rooms for all ages.

The Woods, where they can discover a variety of animals such as the Pelhams snake and the Tremont tortoise, plants or build a beaver lodge.

‘El Rincón de Sonia’, named after Judge Sonia Sotomayor and another native of the county, actress and writer Sonia Manzano, with a selection of children’s books.

There is also a lot of art. The walls are decorated with works by artists from The Bronx or linked to the neighborhood.

“When the children enter the studio of Charles Esperanza, an artist from The Bronx, they can play and they can also make art, also play with the figures. Charles made all the pieces that are here like Mr.Softee’s car,” said director Adusei.

‘Casitas en El Bronx’, is one of the spaces most visited by families.

The colorful house is inspired by native homes that were built in the 1970s and 1980s by Puerto Rican immigrants and if you’re still lucky you can find one in the South Bronx.

It is very important to the museum to ensure that everyone feels included and welcome.

“It seems very inclusive to me and I think the important thing is because there is representation, so really, really, it is something that looks well done, well planned, really, they earn 100 with me,” said the visitor Elizabeth Fernández.

The space is open three days a week, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and tickets must be reserved.
