In this pursuit, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) plays an important role. It is in a local group of galaxies, close to the Milky Way, and bears a striking resemblance to our own. The overall outline and internal spiral structure of the Andromeda Galaxy mirrors that of the Milky Way. Recent discoveries have even shown that it has a bar-shaped core, suggesting a possible similarity to a barred spiral galaxy like ours.
