Exploring the Ancient Archaeological Areas of Wadi and Marsa Jasus in the Red Sea

Among those ancient archaeological areas in the Red Sea are the Wadi and Marsa Jasus, which is located about 22 kilometers south of the city of Safaga. It was a dry valley connected to the sea, and from it the ships of the Pharaohs set off for the Land of Punt to exchange trade between them.

For his part, Wasfi Tamir, a historian in the city of Qusayr, said that the Wadi and Marsa Jasus are the gateway to trade between the Land of Punt and the Pharaohs, as it was called Sawi in the Pharaonic state, and it is among the valleys that connected the Nile to the sea, specifically during the third to sixth dynasties.

Tamir added to “Youm7” that the Romans took advantage of the port after the Pharaonic era and rebuilt it. It was then called Filotera, and in the Pharaonic era it was connected to the Divine Road with Wadi Hammamet (the Qift-Qusayr Road), from where it was transported to the Divine Road and then to Thebes. White stones, and there are inscriptions documenting this in the Middle Kingdom at Marker 94 on the Qift al-Qusayr Road. He explained that he found a plaque on which it was written that many kings visited the country of Punt, and their ships docked in Wadi Sawi.
