In the PODCAST “Click – The Turning Point” of this week, we are looking at the shortage of general practitioners which is becoming more and more glaring in Wallonia and in certain districts of large cities. In addition to exploring the causes, the show also digs into possible solutions to rethink frontline healthcare for tomorrow.
For Elisabeth Degryse, vice-president of Christian mutuality, one of the challenges is to build a less complex health system for citizens: “if tomorrow everyone can say to themselves: in my neighborhood, I know that the gateway to health is such and such a medical center or such a “health center” since it could be called like that… and I know that if I push the door I will be helped, that will already be a great victory! hard to find the right door.
Such a formula could also allow the development of group practices in terms of health. Many practitioners say it today, they aspire to work in a network (general practitioner, physiotherapist, psychologist, nurse…). This is also one of the proposed solutions to the shortage of doctors, advocated by the mutuals. Both Solidaris and Mutualité Chrétienne call for the development and strengthening of group practices.
Paul De Munck, president of the GBO (the main union of general practitioners) imagines the role of the doctor of tomorrow, in this perspective: “the general practitioner of tomorrow will be a doctor who will be able to welcome, in good conditions, all the people who call on his structure. Who will be able to take the time to do prevention and to be part of a transdisciplinary approach. A doctor who can accompany his patient in the complexity of monitoring his health, listen to him, advise him, guide him to make the best possible choices with him. We must for tomorrow allow the general practitioner to find the environment, the time and the methods of remuneration which allow him to do this “.
