Exploring Schöneberg: A Journey through the Legendary Decades

Schöneberg in the 60s, 70s and 80s. There are many pubs around Winterfeldtplatz, but one is legendary: the Ruin. The house on Gleditschstrasse was bombed during the war and never rebuilt; now it is a meeting place for bon vivants, punks and anarchists. Visitors either call what they do here relaxation or expanding their consciousness.
What did Berlin once look like? In a new episode of “Berlin as it once was” we go to the old Schöneberg district. We remember legendary places like Metropol, Loft and “Chez Romy”, visit the Sports Palace and Prelate. The house on the main street with its curved staircases and many columns is a popular event location. The Schönebergers celebrate carnival, fashion ball and hairdressing fair here.
“Berlin as it once was” looks at three exciting decades that have shaped the district. Until the early 1980s, farmer Mendler looked after his cows in a backyard on Steinmetzstrasse and supplied the neighborhood with fresh milk. After an explosive device detonated in the “La Belle” discotheque on the main street in the early morning of April 5, 1986, three people died. The whole world is watching the district.
Many Berliners talk about their Schöneberg. There will be musician Luci van Org, pastor Sylvia von Kekulé, entertainers Margot Schlönzke and Jennifer Berlin, Chana Schütz, the daughter of the former mayor Klaus Schütz, rapper Ben Salomo, radio legend Rik de Lisle (“the old American”), and a writer Michael Wildenhain, boxer Oktay Urkal and master carpenter Ramon Markus, who opened Germany’s first organic store on Pallasstrasse in the early 1970s.
