In any case, that’s the idea that Kenny Bollwerk, a New York content creator on TikTok, known for filming live the rats swarming the city’s streets, had.

It was in a rat-infested construction site in Queens that the TikToker began his lives exploration. Very quickly, his subscribers took over by sending him locations for the next live broadcasts, which continued under the name “ Rat Case » and are followed by several thousand people. After the lives TikTok, the influencer has taken it to the next level: giving tourists a free tour of the corners of the city where you can see the most rats. He explains that, gradually, tourists began to want to join his nocturnal explorations. “ Rats are New York’s mascot, and people want to see them for themselves » confided Kenny Bollwerk to New York Post.

On foot, he takes those who wish near construction sites or restaurants, where many rodents slalom between trash bags. Others are also interested: Real New York Tours, a tourist tour agency, has notably added a stop to its route, near Columbus Park, for visitors fond of rodents.

Regularly, Kenny Bollwerk takes the opportunity to pass on prevention messages, encouraging those who watch him to call the number 311, which is used to report the presence of mice or rats in the city. A strategy that is bearing fruit: after filming the rat infestation in the Queens construction site, more than 100 complaints were received by the number according to the Guardianand the city sent the rodent control service to the site.

Following the coronavirus lockdown, the rat population in New York has increased significantly, among other things because of the outdoor tables set up during health restrictions. In 2022, city inspectors had recorded more than 60,000 reports of rats, compared to around 30,000 in 2021. However, since the appointment of a rat control manager last April, reports have fallen by 15% in June compared to last year.
