Exploring Human Rights Issues: Highlights from the Film Festival Diritti Umani Lugano

Committed international works can be seen at the tenth “Film Festival Diritti Umani Lugano”.

Climate crisis, wars, other conflicts. Anyone who follows the news is literally bombarded with terrible news. Nevertheless, or precisely because of this, one should not close one’s eyes to reality and accept the invitation of the Film Festival Diritti Umani Lugano. It is dedicated to topics such as racism, discrimination and war crimes and encourages discussion and debate. The films don’t necessarily have to affect the audience. Encouraging stories of hope and strength are also told.

Festival im Festival

For the first time there is an FFDUL competition. Films from all over the world were submitted, says festival director Antonio Prata. The second innovation for the tenth anniversary is the expansion of this forum on the subject of human rights through the so-called Oltre Festival – a fringe festival with exhibitions in the Ciani nursery schoola musical reading at Spazio L’Ove, a brunch at Ristorante dal Gallo in the Molino Nuovo district and a “human rights café” at Maghetti district. Oltre also covers topics not previously covered, including inclusion, the right to privacy and new technologies.

Dignity after death

One of the cinematic highlights is Another Body. The documentary deals with identity theft. A student’s life is thrown into disarray when pornographic videos of her created with the help of artificial intelligence circulate on the Internet. Pure strangers is about the courageous doctor Cristina Cattaneo, who campaigns for the dignity of nameless corpses and will be a guest at the festival. And the documentation In the Rearview accompanies Ukrainian war refugees. This year’s human rights prize awarded by the FFDUL goes to the Iranian director and producer Manijeh Hekmat. She will accept the award on October 27th at 8:30 p.m. in the Cinema Corso. Then will be her latest film 19 shown.

And here go to the detailed program.
