Exploring Human Politeness in Interactions with Unmanned Vehicles: A Study by the University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom conducted an interactive project between humans and unmanned vehicles. They dressed up an ordinary car as an unmanned vehicle. The driver drove in disguise, but no one could be seen from the outside.

The result is that even pedestrians know there is no one in the car. But when they saw a car parked in front of the zebra crossing to let them cross the road safely, most people would politely wave to it to express their gratitude, and some people passed in front of the car with no reaction at all. This is also the purpose of this project, to look at the interaction between humans and machines.

In fact, such an experiment is not so much a test of human-machine communication as a look at human manners.

Drivers know that when you stop in front of the zebra crossing to let pedestrians cross the road, although everyone knows that this parking behavior is obeying the traffic rules that give priority to pedestrians, the politeness of the people crossing the road will also be shown at this moment.

A polite person will wave or nod to the parker when crossing the zebra crossing. On the contrary, if you stop to give way, he will walk past in a big way, and some will walk slowly while looking at their mobile phones, not taking the parker seriously.

Politeness is a living habit. If there is no such habit in life, this person will not know how to be polite. People who are not polite, most of them don’t understand the world, and most of them are selfish. If you are polite to him, he will take it as a blessing. Naturally, he doesn’t know how to be grateful, and he doesn’t know good from bad. They are indifferent to seeing a car driven by a real person pull over to make way for them, let alone interact with a driverless autonomous car. So this experiment is a test of communication between a machine and a human, and it is also a test of human education.
