New York City is divided into 5 “boroughs”: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.
Each “borough” is divided into districts: 12 for Manhattan.
Finally, each district is itself divided into neighborhoods which you can see on the map.
The districts present a certain disparity and it is always interesting to compare them.
Today, we take you to District 3, and, in particular, to the East Village, a hotspot for 70s alternative rock/pop (Blondie❤️)
(Part of the neighborhood used to be called Alphabet City because of the four avenues A, B, C, D which cross it. It was said at the time:
« Avenue A, you’re Alright
Avenue B, you’re Brave
Avenue C, you’re Crazy
Avenue D, you’re Dead »)
🏢 On an equivalent surface, District 3 is very populated with only 163,000 inhabitants (2010 census). Rather large sets, therefore.
The male-female distribution is homogeneous: 👩🦰51% 👨🦰49% and few children (11%), where the average is 14%. .
Very high number of inhabitants born outside the United States: 34% (the American average is 11%). This is one of the highest rates in all of Manhattan which is explained in detail below.
- White (Non-Hispanic) |33% Not the lowest rate in all of Manhattan, but in the southern part.
- Black (Non-Hispanic) | 8,4 %
- Asian (Non-Hispanic) | 30.6% (Overrepresented: District includes China Town)
- Other Race (Non-Hispanic) | 2,6 %
- Hispanic (of any race) | 25.1% Strong representation.
👴 We are below the city average in terms of the number of people aged 65 and over: 17.9%
🔫 It’s the third most violent neighborhood in all of Manhattan with 2,360 “major felonies (crimes, violent attacks, rapes). Right next door is District 1, which has the lowest rate of felonies.
🧑🎓79% of residents over 25 are graduates with a low unemployment rate: 2.7%. 10% believe that they have a poor command of English, which is logical given the very low number of “foreign-born” residents
🎓 Number of public schools: 40. That’s a lot! I couldn’t find a completely convincing explanation other than the fact that the district is densely populated and central.
📚 Number of public libraries: 5, average.
🏥 Number of hospitals: 41. That’s a lot.
🏞 Number of parks: 13. That’s also a lot.
🏢 The District has few commercial areas 25%
So, tempted by the East Village in the footsteps of Blondie and Club 82?
